A Clinical Study in Patients with Scabies




Abstract
A clinical observation of 114 cases of scabies was performed in order to evaluate the clinical manifestation and laboratory findings from January 1982 to December 1984 at the Department of Dermatology, Chung Ang University Hospital.
The results were as follows:
1) The incidence of scabies was 1.010o among total patients, and annual frequency decreased gradually.
2) The sex ratio of male to female patients was 2.4 :1(80 : 34), and first and second decades occupied 64.96 of total scabietic patients in age distribution.
3) The monthly distribution of scabietic patients was highest in January(14.9%) and lowest in August(1.8%), but seasonal variation was not prominent.
4) The sites of predilection were as follows; thigh(91.4%), lower abdomen(88.6%), and forearm(88.6%).
5) Infectious rate among the family members was 58.3%, and incubation period was variable.
6) Patients visited within 2 months after initial infection were 87.9% of all cases.
7) About half(45.8%) of patients showed eosinophilia, and 7 among 8 patients showed elevation of serum IgE level.
8) Scybala was found in 92.4%, ova 27.6%, and adult 23.8% of all cases in mineral oil examination.
